Director of Student and Children’s Ministries

 Job Description: The Director of Student and Children’s Ministries will maintain, develop, and grow ministries integrating students (grades 7-12) and children (ages 4-11) into the life of Ovilla United Methodist Church and its community. Providing spiritual leadership aligning with the theology, mission, vision, and values of the church, the Director of Student and Children’s Ministries will create and sustain weekly and long-term programs to intentionally move the church’s youth towards a life of discipleship.

Time Requirements: This is a part-time, salaried position requiring presence on Sunday mornings, Sunday evenings, Wednesday evenings, occasional staff meetings, and all other student events throughout the year. Hours per week will depend on the season and special events. Normal expectation would be 25 hours per week of combined in-person and remote duties. Church Conference sponsored youth mission trips require weeklong attendance at the location.

Qualifications, Skills, Gifts: Students pursuing a degree in Christian Ministry, Education, or related studies, graduates in these degree fields, or individuals with equivalent work experience will be considered. Musical ability is a plus. This individual must be committed to the vision, values, and beliefs of the church, and should demonstrate evidence of a Christ-like attitude in words and actions. Must be able to work independently and be self-motivated, as well as be able to recruit, manage, and encourage a team of volunteers. Must have good organization skills and have the demonstrated ability to connect with all youth, organize safe activities, ensure responsible behavior, and promote Ovilla UMC programs within the church and throughout the community. This position requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work with church staff, parents, and congregants. The candidate must have an evident, personal relationship with Jesus Christ and provide a role model for students.

 Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead and organize effective student and children’s ministry programs implementing fellowship, worship, biblical teaching, discipleship, as well as service projects.

  • Recruit, train, and lead adult lay volunteer leaders. Administer the Ministry-Safe program to assure all volunteers are certified.

  • Help to develop leadership skills within the students by enabling them to plan and conduct some of their own activities.

  • Provide spiritual direction for students and children on an individual basis.

  • Maintain contact with students and parents, keeping them informed of ongoing activities.

  • Keep parents updated on ministry strategies and plans in a way that encourages partnership and involvement.

  • Submit an occasional article for the weekly newsletter and maintain a calendar of student and children’s ministry events.

  • Integrate intentionally the student and children’s ministry into all phases of church life, striving for an intergenerational culture which unites and complements other church and community ministries.

  • Be aware of and work within the church ministry budget.

  • Participate in the Church Council and various committees in the church. Plan and facilitate participation in the junior and senior high Central Texas Conference Youth in Missions (CTCYM) trips.

  • Work with the lead pastor to host family-centric events.

  • Attend all worship services and relevant church events.

  • Create and maintain a viable social media and web presence.

  • Regularly attend extra-curricular functions of students and children, including school lunches and sporting events.

  • Attend annual student and children’s ministry leadership training.

  • Other duties as required.

Reports to: Pastor and Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC)

Compensation Range: $20,000 - $25,000/year. Based on experience and leadership ability.
